Wenn der Vollmond hinter Lesbos in der Ägäis versinkt, sitzt Clinton
Vickers auf den Stufen des Athene‑Tempels in Assos wie einst
Aristoteles und begibt sich auf innere Reisen. Der Professor für
Literatur und Philosophie hat sich frühzeitig pensionieren lassen und
betreibt jetzt eine kleine Pension im Ort.

When the full moon sinks into the Aegean behind the island of Lesbos,
Clinton Vickers sits on the steps of the Temple of Athena in Assos
where once Aristotle sat and allows his mind to roam. The professor of
literature and philosophy took early retirement and now runs a small
guesthouse in the town.

Eine Geige ertönt zart und spielt eine keltische Weise. Ein leichter \Nind streift sanft über die Hänge des Kaz‑Dagi‑Gebirges gegenüber, ein Klavier setzt ein. Clinton Vickers sitzt auf der Veranda seiner Pension und lauscht der Musik. Als die CD ausklingt, sagt er: «Hier fing alles an. In diesem Teil der Welt hat die abendländische Kultur ihre Wurzeln. Der erste Philosoph der Geschichte kanm aus Kleinasien. In Assos unterrichte Aristoteles drei Jahre lang, und auch Apostel Paulus war hier, um die christliche Lehre zu verbreiten, die er schliesslich bis nach Griechenland trug.» Professor Clinton Vickers spricht leise und ab und an mit einem Lächeln, das spüren lässt wie fasziniert er ist. Übrigens müsse er noch richtig stellen, dass er nicht für den Namen der Eris‑Pension verantwortlich sei, die er mit seiner Frau Emily vor zweieinhalb Jahren übernommen hat, sondern der Vorbesitzer. Eris, die Göttin der Zwietracht säte Eifersucht zwischen den schönen Göttinnen Hera, Athene und Aphrodite, die sich daraufhin auf dein Gipfel des Kaz‑Dagi‑Gebirges im ersten Schönheitswettbewerb der Geschichte miteinander massen. Ein Streit, der letztlich zur Tragödie des Trojanischen Krieges führte.
Nein, heute sei Assos ein Ort des Friedens, empfindet er. Ein Ort, der schon vor 2500 Jahren kaum anders ausgesehen hat als heute. Noch immer werden die rechtwinkligen Häuser mit den quaderförmigen Blöcken aus Lavagestein erbaut wie einst auch die Burgmauer des antiken Assos. Und noch immer gibt es nur den einen Pfad hinauf zum Tempel der Athene, hoch über der steinernen Stadt, den einst auch Aristoteles einschlug, wenn er sich auf den Weg zu seiner Schule machte.

Ein unruhiges‑Leben
Als der gebürtige New Yorker 1964 sein Studium der Philosophie, Geschichte und Literatur an der renommierten Georgetown‑Universität in Washington, D. C., abschliesst, weiss er nicht, was er einmal werden soll. Er fühlt Dankbarkeit für die hervorragende Ausbildung, die ihm zuteil wurde, und möchte etwas abgeben.
   Der 22‑Jährige tritt in ein Friedenskorps in Westafrika ein und hilft den schwarzen Jugendlichen beim Aufbau einer eigenen Zeitung. Als er nach zwei Jahren wieder nach Hause kommt, verliebt er sich in Emily, die Schwester eines Jugendfreundes aus High‑School‑Zeiten. «Da reise ich um die halbe Welt, um am Ende meine Nachbarin aus der Heimatstadt zu heiraten.>> Clinton wird Professor und baut als Didakt und Pädagoge Universitäten Lind High‑Schools in Nigeria und Marokko auf. Sobald ein Projekt auch ohne ihn funktionieren kann, hilft er vvoanders. 1995 schliesslich kommt er zum ersten Mal in die Türkei, um in den folgenden fünf Jahren die Entwicklung der progressiven Enka­Olkullari-Schule in Istanbul voranzubringen. Während der Ferien zieht es ihn und Emily immer wieder nach Assos ‑ ein letztes Mal, als das Projekt ausgelaufen ist, um von der Türkei Abschied zu nehmen. Wo sie in Zukunft leben Lind arbeiten wollen, wissen sie zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht. Als sie die Eris‑Pension entdecken und hören, dass sie verkauft werden soll, fällt die Entscheidung. Clinton lässt sich mit 58 Jahren frühzeitig pensionieren, und im Frühjahr 2000 beherbergen sie die ersten Gäste.

Zu Hause heisst: bei sich ankommen
«Inzwischen fühlen wir uns in Assos zu Hause», sagt Clinton. «Emily wird von den alteingesessenen Frauen sogar zu traditionellen Feiern eingeladen. Sie spricht auch sehr gut türkisch.» Er selbst leider gar nicht. Er sitzt dann mit den Männern am Marktplatz und sieht sich ein Fussballspiel im Fernsehen an. Dafür kann er sich gut mit seinen englisch sprechenden Gästen unterhalten, zu 85 Prozent Künstler und Intellektuelle aus Istanbul, der geringere Teil kommt aus Europa, Hongkong und Korea. «Und sie kehren alle wieder ein, weil Emily so gute Kekse backt», lächelt er.
In ihrer Freizeit malt Ernily, und Clinton hegt die Blumen im Garten ‑ oder er schreibt. In Vollmondnächten steigen sie mit einem befreundeten Ehepaar zur Akropolis hinauf, setzen sich zwischen die Säulen des Athene‑Tempels, trinken Wein und diskutieren miteinander‑, wie einst Aristoteles mit seinen Schülern ‑, bis der Mond hinter der Insel Lesbos in der Ägäis versunken ist. In diesen Momenten fühlt Clinton sich in eine andere Zeit versetzt ‑ wie die Figur des jugendlichen New Yorkers Xenokrates, der Protagonist seines Romans, an dem Clinton zurzeit arbeitet: Xenokrates fällt durch einen Unfall in ein halbbewusstes Koma und durchläuft etliche Inkarnationen: Er findet sich zunächst mitten im Trojanischen Krieg in Assos wieder, später erlebt er am selben Ort die Invasion der Perser und anderer Völker, ihre Entwicklung und deren Einfluss auf die abendländische Kultur bis zum heutigen Tag. Als er aus dem Koma erwacht, ist er freier und selbstbestimmter geworden. Er vveiss jetzt um seine kulturellen Wurzeln und erkennt, welchen tradierten Idealen und Derikweisen er bislang unbewusst gefolgt war.
«Ich war viel unterwegs, nirgends wollte ich bleiben», sagt Clinton zum Schluss. «In dieser Gegend finde ich innere Ruhe.» Er scheint angekommen zu sein dort, wo alles begann. +

It is in  this part of the world that western culture has its roots. The first  philosopher in history came from Asia Minor. Aristotle taught in Assos for three years and the Apostle Paul also came here to spread the word of Christ before finally taking it on to Greece." Professor Vickers speaks quietly and now and again gives a smile that evidences the fascination he feels for his theme. By the way, he adds, he is not responsible for the name of the Pension Eris, which he took over with his wife Emily two-and-a-half years ago, but the previous proprietor. again to Assos - one final time when the project was finished in order to bid their farewell to Turkey. When they arrived, they had still not decided where they wanted to live and work next. But when they discovered the Pension Eris and heard that is was for sale, the decision was as good as made. Clinton took early retirement at the age of 58 and in spring of 2000 they were welcoming their first guests.

" We now look on Assos as üor home;" says Clinton. "Emily is even invited by the local ladies to attend traditional festivals. She also speaks very good Turkish." Unfortunately, he cannot say the same for  himself. But he is happy to sit with the men in the market­place and watch a football match on television, as he can always enjoy a good

stirred up jealously among the beautiful goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, who thereupon decided to face off on the summit of Kaz Dagi (the Mount Ida of Greek mythology) giving the world the first beauty contest it had ever seen. A quarrel that in the end led to the tragedy of the Trojan War. Nowadays, Assos is a place of peace, he feels. A town that today hardly looks much different from how it must have done 2,500 years ago. The square little houses are still constructed in ashlar blocks hewn from lava rock just as were once the fortified walls of ancient Asses. And a path still climbs up to the, Temple of Athena, high above the stony town, which in a different age. was taken hy Aristotle on his way to teach at his school.

A restless life
When New York‑born Clinton Vickers graduated in philosophy, history and literature from prestigious Georgetown University in Walshington, D.C., in 1964, he had no idea of what he should do. He was grateful for the excellent education he had received and felt he wanted to give something in return. So the 22‑year‑old joined the Peace Corps and went to West Africa, where he helped local youngsters set up their own newspaper. When he returned home two vears later, he fell in love with Emily, the sister of an old friend from high school " I trav elled halfway round the world to end up marrying a neighbour frorn my home town." Clinton became a professor and helped as an educator to develop universities and high schools in Nigeria and Morocco. As soon as one project could run without his help, he would moveon to the next. In 1995, he even tually came to Turkey for the first time in order to spend the next five years getting the progressive Enka Okullari School established in Istanbul. discussion with his English‑speaking guests, 85 percent of whom are artists and intellectuals from Istanbul; only a small number come from Europe, Hong Kong and Korea. "But they all come back here again because Emily bakes such good cookies,' he says vvith a smile
In her free time, Emily paints, while. Clinton tends the flowers in their garden ‑ or he writes. On nights when the moon is full, they climb up to the acropolis with an other couple, sit between the Doric columns of Athena's temple, drink wine and engage in friendly conversation, just as Aristotle once did with his students ‑ until the moon has sunk down into the Aegean behind the island of Lesbos. At moments like these, Clinton feels transported into a different age like the character of the young New Yorker Xenokrates, the protagonist of the novel on which he is currently working. As a result of an accident, Xenokrates falls into a serni­conscious coma and experiences a number of different incarnations. Firstof,all, he finds himself in Assos during the Trojan War, later he experiences the invasions of the Persians and of other peoples, the development of the town and its influence on western culture right up to the present day. When he finally awakes from the coma, he has become freer and more self-determined. He now understands his cultural roots and recognises the ideals and ways of thinking that have been handed down to him and that he has followed so far without realising why.
"I travelled a lot, hut I never wanted to settle down anywhere," explains Clinton at the end. "In this region, I can find inner peace." He now seems to have arrived ‑ where everythinq began.+
